I usually am not one to jump on any bandwagon when it comes to not eating certain foods. However, as I've said before when I felt like I was at the end of my rope with not getting pregnant 2 years ago, I tried the Candida cleanse and even though I stuck with it for less than 2 weeks, it is when I got pregnant without the help of clomid or a trigger shot. The Candida cleanse is basically all organic, unprocessed food and very little meat.
So when my coworker who is cra-cra-crazy obsessed with eating all natural, no vaccinations, breastfeeding for 2 years and so on posted this article on Facebook, "7 Foods That Should Never Cross Your Lips" I clicked on it thinking it would be a good eye roller article. But then.........I saw 5 out of 7 of the foods my family eats on a weekly basis and often times several times a week. The foods they had listed that could affect fertility are canned tomatoes and microwave popcorn. Hummm, interesting right? Now I feel like I'm in a bit of a pickle- do I stop eating these items now knowing that I want to be pregnant in a couple years, or do I just wait until a few months before I start TTCing at which time I will probably go back to the Candida cleanse and obviously not eat canned tomatoes and microwave popcorn? I wouldn't even give two seconds of thought to this if it were in some extreme all natural eating newsletter or website but it was in Prevention and I would say they are a reputable magazine. Food for thought?
I saw this too and I was shocked by the canned tomatoes. So we are changing that. I will also be buying organic potatoes from now on. The rest wasn't a shocker. We make our own popcorn on the stove because of all the chemicals and we buy only organic milk and apples. There are documentaries called "Fat, sick and nearly dead" And of course "Food Inc." both were very enlightening for me. Our food supply just isn't what it was when our parents were younger or when I was younger. Sadly, fast food has been the blame, because it caused us to find ways to produce food fast and in bulk.
ReplyDeleteAlso, watch out for ground beef that is not organic. Many times there are fillers, like ammonia (yes ammonia!) in it. Also, cooking sprays have tons of harmful chemicals. A cancer survivor once told me to never use it again!
There are tons of healthy organic alternatives to the foods we eat. I find I spend the same amount I spent when I shopped at Wa*****. But, I get more food that is healthy for us.
I have to admit that it's a process and my advice to anyone would be to start small and make gradual changes over time so it's not overwhelming.
I'm going to check out Fred Meyer's and see what they have for tomatoes in glass jar's instead. We don't have a Trader Joe's or Whole Foods so we are limited on are organic selection but considering I used canned tomatoes probably twice a week, I need to find some!! I can order them by the case on Amazon and Muir Glen uses cans but they say they don't use BPA anymore. I've seen Food Inc. but I'll have to check out the other one. We eat microwave popcorn at least every other day but the kids enjoying watching it in the regular popper more.
ReplyDeleteI definitely think our food has to do a lot with the health problems and even though we cook at home a lot with fresh ingredients just like my Grandma's used to do, their food came from their own gardens and they raised their own meat and had their own chickens and they never had the fertility problems I've experienced.
Do you have the Misto or something similiar for olive oil to use as a spray? I use one but use Pam in my baking dishes so I'll swap that out after what you said:)
My dad is a meat manager and I always pick his brain on the meat stuff and he's very good about telling people about the fillers and also the "solution" they pump into meats because those are really not good for you.
